Butt Drugs

Posted in: Scott Sands

Butt Drugs is supposed to be a real drugstore in Corydon, Indiana … and this is supposed to be their actual commercial.  Really.

So, last month I made a few Grammy predictions.  I guess I did well, considering my job is to pick hit music – 75% accurate.  Now, I’m going to see how well I can do with movie predictions before Sunday night’s Academy Awards telecast.  Admittedly, I don’t know much about movies (except what I like and don’t like), and have actually NOT seen ANY of the movies nominated.  My predictions are based purely on advertising, hype, and what I’ve read.

Best Picture:  Avatar
Lead Actor:  Jeff Bridges

Supporting Actress:  Mo’Nique
Animated Film:  Up
Best Director:  James Cameron

You can judge me on Monday.  Leave your predictions in the Comments.

Billboard Magazine, one of the last remaining music industry trade publications (okay, it might be the last if they’re still in print) asked my thoughts about the Artists for Haiti remake of “We Are The World.”  You can read my comments online today:

“We’ve been playing “We Are the World 25″ several times a day since its debut. I think it has definitely been one of the rare “event records” of the past ten years and listeners were certainly interested to hear it at least once. However, in purely unscientific web poll research, most listeners have told us …”

There was no fanfare.  There was no big announcement.  There was no massive ad blitz to launch a re-branding campaign.  In fact, most of us would probably have never realized the dramatic statement made by Viacom’s MTV Networks today without the eagle eye of Perez Hilton

MTV’s logo has not changed much since the Moon Man first landed on August 1, 1981 … until today … when the simple tag line “Music Television” underneath the MTV letters disappeared.

Finally, the network has acknowledged what all of us realized years ago — it’s no longer about the music, it’s about Tween Reality Television.  I wouldn’t quite say today is our generation’s version of “the day the music died,” but we’ll always long for the original VeeJays and the suspense waiting for Michael Jackson or Madonna’s new video.  Goodbye, old friend.

Let me admit upfront that I did not see every commercial during last night’s Super Bowl XLIV, and I’ll probably never take the time to watch them all online.  I did see a few really good ones from Budweiser; however, I was disappointed by E-Trade and Doritos.  But, in my opinion, CBS produced two of the best spots during The Big Game:

My pick for #1 – NCIS “Head Slap – Okay, I’m biased as an NCIS fan and, if you’re not familiar with the show, you may not get the humor.

My pick for #2 – Letterman Promo with Oprah & Jay Leno – Very topical, and a good start for Jay to begin rehabilitating his image.

And, #3 may never have aired.  I didn’t see it during the game and pre-game hype said this one was “banned” from the game.  But, it still might be one of the better spots Budweiser has produced.

“We Are The World (Haiti/2010)” was produced by Quincy Jones, who also produced the original 1985 song featuring Michael Jackson.  It has contributions from Celine Dion, Wyclef Jean, Pink, Jamie Foxx, Carlos Santana, LL Cool J, Barbra Streisand, Miley Cyrus, Kanye West, Akon, Jeff Bridges, Usher, Jason Mraz, Brian Wilson, Brandy, Lil Wayne, Josh Groban, and numerous others. Vince Vaughn is even part of the chorus.

An ABC news video on the “We Are The World” recording is making the rounds on social media channels. It’s a behind-the-scenes look at the recording process, with brief clips from the song. Celebrities tweeted about the recording, including socialite Nicole Richie; she tweeted a claim that she outsang Jennifer Hudson.

Taylor Swift walked away from tonight’s Grammy Awards with the Album of the Year award.  I thought Dave Matthews Band might steal it from her, but she deservedly won for her Fearless CD.

As you can see from my blog post below, I nailed three out of four key Grammy predictions last week.  Kings of Leon won Record of the Year and Zac Brown won Best New Artist.

I should have gone with my gut instincts for Song of the Year.  Beyonce’s Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It) was definitely one of last year’s biggest songs; but, I didn’t think it would win in the writer’s category.  Kudos.

Based on the Vegas betting odds, if you wagered $100 in each of the categories I listed below, you would have won $400 net following my predictions.

You’re welcome :)

If you watched the Grammys, please leave your comments below.  Did you like the Michael Jackson tribute?  What about that 3D nonsense?  How was the Bon Jovi set?  Who was your favorite performance?  Best & Worst dressed?
